Perched on the highest part at Alexandra Headland on a north facing slope this new residence was cleverly designed to work with the topography. The elderly owner sought a contemporary low maintenance garden to complement the modern design style of her home.
The design response embraced the connection to the ocean; with stunning views from the upstairs living area. A simple layout of three species of grasses of varying growth heights planted in swathes are symbolic of the rolling waves sweeping across the garden which come alive in the coastal breeze.
Continuing with this theme, a main focal sculpture of the garden was conceived comprising of a group of flexible aluminium rods that sway with air movement. The strength of their design is important in providing a visual connection to the garden from the upper level of the house, drawing the eye away from the dominant distant coastal views to the ground artistic pattern below.
A gravel path meanders through the garden providing gentle access to all areas, interspersed with rectangular lines of white stones representative of surf boards and a link to the nearby renowned surf break.
This garden demonstrates a simple and contemporary approach, which is low maintenance and a truly bespoke solution.
